Google Surfaces for a Single Store: Local Inventory, Business Profile and Ads

How one store gets its stock onto Google Search, Maps and Shopping, keeps Merchant Center clean, and measures in-store sales from ads.

A single store reaches Google through three linked accounts. Google Business Profile holds the store, Merchant Center holds the products, and Google Ads buys paid reach. When they share one address and one stock count, your products show free on Search, Maps and the Shopping tab with “in store” availability. Local inventory ads can extend that reach. The guides below cover setting this up from Shopify, fixing the errors that stop it, and measuring the sales it drives at the register.

How the pieces connect

For a Shopify POS store, the Google & YouTube app is the native link. Google’s setup page asks for a physical retail location in Shopify with stock counts and more than 10 approved products. It also needs a verified Business Profile at the same address. Once that is in place, free local listings start. Paid local inventory ads run through Performance Max or a Shopping campaign.

If another POS is your register, Google’s Local Inventory app (formerly Pointy) syncs from supported systems such as Clover, Square and Lightspeed. If you have no live stock data, the Business Profile product editor lets you add items by hand.

Where single stores get stuck

In our accounts, three problems account for most of the trouble:

  • Address mismatch. Shopify and Business Profile spell the address differently, so nothing syncs.
  • Missing inventory data. A variant has no quantity at the retail location, or a store code does not match. Google’s help page says Shopify’s local inventory syncs automatically and manual feed rules should not be used on it.
  • No in-store measurement. The app’s conversion tracking covers website actions. A register sale driven by a local ad does not show as a conversion unless you add store visits or an offline import.

Who this pillar is for

The owner of one store, with one register, who runs Google Ads and Merchant Center without an agency or a developer. Every guide works for a store in Canada or the US, and notes where CAD, USD, GST/HST or sales tax change the answer.
