Local Inventory Ads on Shopify: Setup for a Single Store
Set up Google local inventory ads from Shopify POS: requirements, the Google & YouTube app steps, campaign settings, and what the native sync misses.
Local inventory ads on Shopify run through the Google & YouTube app. You need a physical store location in Shopify with stock counts and more than 10 approved products. You also need a verified Google Business Profile with a matching address and a linked Google Merchant Center account. Turn on local inventory in the app’s Overview tab. Then let Performance Max serve local ads by default, or switch on local products in a Shopping campaign. The native route works well when Shopify POS is your register. It falls short when another POS holds your real counts.
This guide is for a single-store retailer in the US or Canada who runs a Shopify store and does the marketing alone. It matters because Google reports a 21% lift in visits for retailers running these ads.
What are Google local inventory ads?
Google local inventory ads are Shopping-style ads for products in stock at nearby stores. Nearby shoppers searching on Google see the product, the price and an “In store” label.
Shopify’s retail guide says these listings show at the top of Google Search results, on Google Maps and in the Shopping tab. A click can open a Google-hosted local storefront with your in-store products, store hours and directions.
The ads connect shopper searches to an offline purchase. Local shoppers see the item is on your shelf before they drive over.
Free local listings vs paid local inventory ads
The same store inventory feed powers two Google local inventory programs. Google groups both under one add-on, so the two local inventory ads programs share one setup.
| Program | Cost | Where it shows | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free local listings | Free | Search, Maps, Shopping tab, the “See what’s in store” panel | Every store with clean stock counts |
| Local inventory ads | Cost per click | Ad slots on Google Search, Maps and Shopping, plus YouTube through Demand Gen | Stores ready to pay for more reach |
Start with free local listings. Run ads once the feed has run clean for a few weeks.
Who Google local inventory ads suit
Google says it works with retailers that have brick and mortar stores, meaning physical stores shoppers can walk into. Google local inventory ads suit a local store that keeps accurate counts and carry relevant products people search for by name.
In our accounts, the best fits are shops with items that sell out, such as sizes or popular brands. Shopify merchants with that stock reach potential customers at the moment of intent.
Local inventory ads Shopify requirements
Shopify and Google list two sets of requirements. The setup guide stops on any gap.
Shopify side
- Use Shopify POS.
- A physical retail location that you sell from.
- Point of sale inventory, with a quantity for each product at each store location.
- More than 10 products.
Google side
- Onboarding for the Google & YouTube app complete, with your Google Merchant Center account linked.
- Products that meet Google’s policies and show as approved in the Product listings section of the app’s Overview page.
- A verified Google Business Profile.
The program is open in the US and Canada, and you must be located in the country you target. Online checkout is not required for local listings.
Your Shopify store still has to pass general rules. Shopify lists no password, a payment provider, a refund policy, terms of service and visible contact details.
Enable local inventory ads in the Google & YouTube app
Google’s help page gives these steps inside the app:
- Open the Google & YouTube app and select the Overview tab.
- Scroll to the Local inventory section and select Get started.
- Create or confirm your Google Business Profile. It must be verified.
- Use the same address in the profile and in your Shopify location. This address match is how inventory syncs between the two.
- Confirm you have more than 10 approved products, then select I understand.
- In Connect a Google Business Profile account, enter the email you used to create the profile and select Connect.
That last step links the profile to Merchant Center. To undo it, open the app’s Settings tab, find Google services, and select Disconnect. Adding locations later follows the same address rule.
In our accounts, the address check is where most single stores stall. “Unit 2, 140 Main St” versus “140 Main Street #2” is the mismatch to fix first.
How long the setup process takes
In our accounts, the setup guide takes under an hour once both Google accounts are in hand. Shopify says Google reviews products within 3 to 5 business days.
How the local product inventory feed works
Google local inventory needs two data sets. Your product feed holds titles, prices and links. Your local product inventory feed holds store inventory: the store code, product ID, availability and quantity.
Both appear as data sources under Settings > Data sources. The Google & YouTube app builds both data sources from your Shopify store, so there is no feed management for you to do.
Google’s help page says local inventory from Shopify syncs automatically. Do not add manual feed rules to the product feed. Each Shopify POS sale lowers the location count, and the app passes it along.
Keep stock information up to date
Accurate inventory information is the whole product here. Nearby shoppers who drive over for an item you sold yesterday rarely come back. Stale store inventory loses more customers than ads win.
Keep counts up to date: receive stock the day it arrives and count best sellers often. The app only sends the inventory information Shopify holds.
Campaign settings for local inventory ads
Free local listings start once the data is approved. Paid local inventory ads need Google Ads ad campaigns. Google describes three routes.
| Campaign type | What to do | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Max | Select the Merchant Center account and country, then Save | Local inventory ads serve by default once a local inventory feed exists |
| Shopping | Settings > Shopping campaign settings > Local products, then check Turn on ads for products sold in local stores | Google says these ads now run by default here; review inventory filters for separate budgets |
| Demand Gen | Pick the Merchant Center feed with local products | Shows local offers on YouTube; match location targeting to your store area |
Run local inventory ads in Performance Max
Performance Max is the simplest way to promote products for a single store. It serves local and online offers from one budget.
Split budgets for in-store products
Google says separate bids are possible for products sold only in your store. Use the Channel and Channel exclusivity filters, set to local stores plus single-channel.
Bid during store hours
Shopify’s retail guide recommends maximizing bids during store hours, when foot traffic can follow the click. A shopper who sees “In store” at 9 p.m. finds your local store closed. Raise bids while you are open and keep ad spend low overnight.
How ads show by product type
Google also publishes how ad formats behave by product type.
| Product availability | Shopper near your store | Shopper not near your store |
|---|---|---|
| Online only | Shopping ad | Shopping ad |
| Online and in store | Local inventory ad | Shopping ad |
| In store only | Local inventory ad | No ad |
Google local inventory ads for products you only sell in store earn nothing outside your radius. Keep them in a campaign with tight location targeting.
Track campaign performance
For performance data in standard Shopping, open the campaign, select the Segment icon, then Click Type. Local clicks show as “Shopping - Product - Local.”
Shopify’s retail guide says you can also add a Google Analytics property for the local storefront. It reports user behavior such as direction requests, devices and visit times. Those are the key metrics for a store that sells at the counter.
What Google local inventory ads cost
Free local listings cost nothing. Google local inventory ads use cost-per-click bidding, the same as standard Shopping.
Shopify’s retail guide says the charge comes after the click. That is when the shopper reaches the Google-hosted page, or your own website if in-store pickup is on. Your campaign budget caps your ad spend.
To judge whether the spend pays, compare it with the store sales you can tie to the ads. Our calculator in the numbers section runs that test at your margin. In our accounts, store sales from local clicks often outrun the online sales report.
Results: foot traffic and store visits
Google’s add-on page gives one figure. From July 2023 to July 2024, retailers using local inventory ads alongside Shopping ads saw 21% more store visits. They also saw 9% more online conversions on in-store products.
Shopify’s retail guide cites more. SportChek reported 108% more shop visits from local inventory ads. The guide adds that 78% of shoppers look up local store information weekly.
For a single store, more foot traffic and more sales at the counter are what matter. Count it the plain way too: ask new customers how they found you, and tag those store sales.
Measure foot traffic from physical stores
Google Ads reports visits to physical stores only above privacy thresholds Google does not publish. Our guide on POS offline conversion tracking covers what a single store can measure.
Price, tax and availability rules
Google’s local inventory specification has three rules that change the answer for a Canadian or US store.
- Tax: Store prices exclude tax for the US and Canada. Do not load GST, HST or state sales tax into the price.
- Quantity to status: Google treats 3 or more as in stock, 1 to 2 as limited availability, and 0 as out of stock.
- Pickup: If you offer store pickup,
pickup_slais required. Values run fromsame daytomulti-week.
Google also checks that your product page matches what the ad promised. Its help page warns that repeated availability mismatches lead to an account suspension from local ads and listings.
In-store pickup options
Google lists three in-store pickup options. Pickup today covers items bought or reserved online and collected the same or next day. Pickup later comes in two forms.
Pickup in store must be possible in under 24 hours for an item to count as in stock. CAD and USD both work; feed currency follows the country you target.
What Shopify’s native route does not cover
The Google & YouTube app is the right choice when Shopify POS is your register and Shopify holds the true count. Three gaps sit outside it.
A third-party POS
The app reads stock from your Shopify location. If your register is another POS, Shopify’s count is only as good as the sync between the two systems. When that sync lags, Google shows stale stock.
In that case, a local product inventory feed sent straight from your POS is the better route. Google says the Content API for Shopping reached its sunset date on August 18, 2026. Any feed tool still on the Content API must move to the Merchant API.
Store codes
The Shopify route matches by address, not by store code. If you build your own feed instead, every row needs a store_code that matches the profile exactly. See our guide on missing inventory data and store codes for the rules.
Offline conversions
The app’s conversion tracking measures website actions such as purchase and checkout started. It does not send in-store sales to Google Ads. A register sale from a local ad shows no conversion without an offline import.
Common local inventory errors
| Merchant Center message | Likely cause | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Missing inventory data | No matching local stock row for the product | Confirm the Shopify location has a quantity for the variant, then resync |
| Invalid store code | Code in the feed does not match the profile | Fix the code in the profile’s Advanced settings, wait 24 hours |
| Business Profiles without inventory data | A linked profile has no stock rows | Remove the profile if it is not a store, or add its stock |
| Inconsistent availability | Product page and feed disagree | Show “available in store” wording that matches your stock |
| Pending processing | Offer not reviewed yet | Wait at least 24 hours before checking again |

Local inventory ads FAQ
Can I use Shopify for inventory management?
Yes, for a single Shopify store. Shopify tracks quantity per location, and Shopify POS updates it with each sale. That count is what the app sends to Google local inventory.
What is the best inventory app for Shopify?
For Google local inventory, the best app is the one that keeps Shopify’s location count right. For a Shopify POS store, that is Shopify itself. If a third-party POS holds stock, use its own sync or a Merchant API feed tool.
Do I need Shopify POS for Google local inventory ads?
For the app route, yes. Shopify’s requirements list Shopify POS. Without it, Google’s Local Inventory app can sync from POS systems such as Clover, Square and Lightspeed for free local listings.
Do Google local inventory ads work in Canada?
Yes. Free local listings and paid ads both run in Canada and the US. Target the country your store is in.
Are Google local inventory ads worth it for one store?
Start with free local listings. Run ads when you have items people search for by name and a margin that covers the click cost.
