Missing Inventory Data in Merchant Center: Store Code Fixes
Fix Merchant Center's missing inventory data and invalid store code errors for a single store, with causes, menu paths and the Shopify route explained.
The missing inventory data merchant center error means a product has no local inventory row in Google Merchant Center. It cannot show as available in your physical store. For one store, the cause is usually a store code or ID mismatch, an unverified or unlinked profile, or an unneeded add-on. If you sync through Shopify’s Google & YouTube app, the answer sits in Shopify and Business Profile, not feed rules.
This guide is for a US or Canadian store owner who sees the missing inventory data error in a Google Merchant Center account. Missing local inventory data stops free local listings and local ads for those items, so physical shops lose their best free Google surface.
Missing inventory data: error-to-cause table
Google Merchant Center has a help article for each local inventory error. This table pulls them together so you can understand each issue.
| Merchant Center message | Cause | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Missing inventory data | No local row; a required attribute missing; code or ID mismatch | Local inventory data |
| Invalid store code error | Code links to no store; profile unverified or unlinked; 24-hour delay | Business Profile settings |
| Business Profiles without inventory data | A linked, verified profile has no rows | Add inventory or remove the store |
| Offer does not exist | Row ID is not in your product feed | Product data, then reprocess |
| Closed, suspended or disabled profile | Profile closed or broke guidelines | Reopen, correct or appeal |
| Pending processing | Offer not reviewed yet | Wait at least 24 hours |
How store codes work
A store code is the unique ID for one location. Google’s specification sets the rules:
store_codeis required on every local inventory row.- It must be identical to the code in Business Profile.
- It is case-sensitive.
Main01andMAIN01are different stores. - It can be up to 64 characters.
Locations can take 24 hours to sync into Google Merchant Center. Upload inventory at least 24 hours after you link the profile or change a code.
Add or edit your store code
Google’s single-location path:
- Go to business.google.com.
- Select the More icon (three vertical dots), then Business Profile settings, then Advanced settings.
- Next to Store code, select the pencil icon.
- Enter the code and select Save.
Avoid the spreadsheet option; bulk edits to an existing code create a duplicate location. We recommend a short code with your brand in it, never changed.
Fix invalid store code, step by step
Google’s page for this error gives this order.
- Find the bad codes. In Google Merchant Center, go to Settings > Data sources > Supplemental sources and download the error report.
- Compare spelling and case against Business Profile.
- Add any missing code. In Business Profile Manager, set the filter to Missing store codes.
- Verify the profile. Switch the filter to Unverified; a disabled or unverified profile cannot carry inventory.
- Check the address details are valid and physically accessible.
- Check the link. Confirm the verified profile shows under Business info > Stores.
- Resubmit, then wait 24 hours until processing is completed.
Resolve missing local inventory data, step by step
Work through these in order for a single store.
- Online-only seller? In GMC, go to Settings > Your Add-ons and select Remove on the Local inventory ads card.
- Required attributes. Each row needs
store_code,id,quantityandavailability. - ID match. The
idmust match the product feed exactly, including case. A trimmed Shopify variant ID or SKU breaks it. - Source type. Use the Local product inventory source type, not a supplemental source.
- Mixed methods. If one source carries online and local products, uncheck Physical store marketing methods.
- Profile health. Open Business info > Stores and select View Profiles. Each profile must be claimed, active and coded.
This particular issue cannot be resolved per product. Download the items from the Needs attention tab under Products, compare them with your data sources, and re-upload.
Product availability values
Google accepts in_stock, limited_availability, on_display_to_order and out_of_stock. With quantity present, it uses the lower signal, so 1 to 2 units shows as limited. That explains how to fix limited stock showing wrongly. A store-level price also overrides the feed value.
Product pages and structured data
Google also checks product pages. Keep in-store stock wording and any structured data in step with the feed. A product page saying “sold out” beside an in-stock row causes repeat errors.
What Shopify’s native route does not cover
Google says local inventory syncs automatically through the Google & YouTube app once onboarding is completed. Do not add manual feed rules. Shopify links by address, not a store code you control.
That leaves three gaps.
- Variants with no location quantity. The app needs stock at your physical store location. In the stores we work with, this is the most common Shopify cause of missing local inventory data.
- A third-party POS. If another register holds the count, build a direct local inventory source under the store code rules.
- Old feeds left running. A second local source from an old feed app disagrees with Shopify. Remove it.
Common questions about missing inventory data
Why isn’t my inventory updating on Shopify?
Shopify’s help page says to check that Track quantity is on, and that stock is assigned to the store location. That is the usual point of failure.
Why isn’t my Shopify product showing in the inventory?
Usually tracking is off, or the item has no quantity at the retail location. Open the product’s Inventory section and enter the count for that location. View the variant’s SKU too.
How to fix Google Merchant Center misrepresentation?
The misrepresentation policy covers missing or misleading content about your business. Add contact details, a refund policy and full shipping costs to your online store, then request a review.
How long until the error clears?
Profile changes take up to 24 hours to show in Google Merchant Center, and feed updates 24 to 48 hours. If you are still stuck after that, run the steps again.
Where to ask for help
If you post the issue in the community forum, share screenshots of the error details and status, with your account ID hidden. Read each reply against Google’s help pages.
