Close and Books for a Single Store: Cash, QuickBooks and Commission

Daily close, QuickBooks reconciliation and staff commission for a one-register store on Shopify POS, written from Shopify and Intuit's own docs.

Closing the day and keeping the books straight comes down to three routines for a single store. Count and close the cash drawer every night. Reconcile every deposit in QuickBooks against its source. Pay commission from the right staff report. Shopify POS handles each part, but no single screen does all of it. The guides below show which Shopify and QuickBooks screens to use, in what order, and where you still need a spreadsheet or a habit.

The daily close

Shopify POS has no single end-of-day button. The register session close is your cash check: count the drawer, compare with the expected balance, and print a summary of every payment type. Sales totals come from the Daily Sales report in POS Analytics. Shopify’s own advice is to close sessions regularly and use the admin’s Finance reports, not sessions, for long-term reporting.

The books

Card sales through Shopify Payments arrive in payouts. The Shopify Connector by QuickBooks books each sale and fee to a clearing account. It then builds one deposit per payout for you to match in the bank feed. Intuit’s guide is clear that you should match, never add, that deposit. Cash sales have no payout, so you build their deposit yourself from the session close. That split is where most single-store reconciliations go wrong.

Commission

Shopify keeps two kinds of staff credit: who sold the item and who rang it up. Commission belongs to the first. Shopify’s June 22, 2026 update switched attribution on automatically from July 6 for eligible stores that had not set it up. A store that never touched the setting changed method mid-year.
