Staff Commission and Sales Attribution in Shopify POS

Pay staff commission from Shopify POS: how attribution works after the June 2026 change, which report to use, and where returns and online sales fit.

To pay staff commission from Shopify POS, use the POS total sales by staff member report in the Shopify admin. It groups net revenue by the person credited on each line, after refunds. Under Shopify’s June 22, 2026 update, attribution switched on automatically from July 6 for eligible stores. It credits whoever is pinned in at the register. That default is fine for one person per shift. If two people share a till, set attribution on purpose. Attribution needs Shopify POS Pro at the location.

This guide is for the owner of one retail store who pays staff commission and runs payroll alone. Why it matters: commission paid from the wrong report costs the business money and the team’s trust.

Shopify POS staff commission: pick the right report

Shopify keeps two kinds of POS staff credit. Paying from the wrong one is the most common problem we see in a small business.

Report Groups by Use it for
POS total sales by staff member Person credited at checkout Commission
POS staff sales total Person who rang it up Till control
Tips by staff member (Finance) Person on the tip Tip payouts

A floor specialist who never touches the till only shows in the first report, not in staff sales totals. If the Rate of staff-assisted sales column is low, your team is not adding themselves.

What changed in June 2026

Shopify’s June 22, 2026 changelog lists the changes.

  • Automatic attribution from July 6 for stores that had not customized it.
  • Lines stop showing staff by default. Tap one and select Attribute staff to view it.
  • New Staff Attribution reports in Shopify POS Analytics.

If you never touched attribution, a statement that spans July 6 mixes two methods. Run each month separately.

How attribution works at checkout

Shopify’s help page lets you credit a whole order to one person, or split it between different staff members.

From the cart

Select lines, or Select all, then tap Add staff and pick a name. Use it when different staff members helped one customer.

From the Smart Grid

Tap Add staff to sale, pick one person for the whole order, and Save. Those are the only steps.

Required or automatic

In the Shopify POS settings you choose manual or automatic credit. With Required on, staff cannot remove a credit, which also stops a cashier fixing a mistake.

Fix attribution after the fact

Staff with Manage sales attribution for orders set to Allowed can edit completed orders under Orders > Staff. Use it when staff want to add a missed credit at closing time.

Staff management and staff permissions

Since June 11, 2026, Shopify handles POS staff management in Settings > Users in the Shopify admin. Create and manage each login there.

Unique PINs

Shopify gives every person with POS access a unique PIN for the point of sale. In our accounts, shared PINs cause most commission disputes.

Roles and access

Custom roles need POS Pro. Give the edit permission to one manager and keep staff permissions tight on discounts and returns.

Unlimited staff for a growing team

Shopify’s pricing page says POS Pro includes unlimited staff accounts, a key feature for a growing team. Pro also adds staff features such as custom roles. The Basic plan limits POS logins.

Returns, exchanges and online orders

  • Returns. The commission report is net of returns, so a return next pay period reduces the next statement.
  • Exchanges keep their seller. Tap the line in an exchange to see the credited person.
  • Email carts. When customers check out from a cart a team member sent, Shopify credits that person.

Ordinary orders on your Shopify store are not credited. If staff help customers who later buy online, attribution will not see it. Giving credit for those means a manual rule.

Turning the report into a commission statement

Open Analytics > Reports, filter to Retail Sales, and choose the staff member report. Set the pay period and export a CSV.

Spreadsheet adjustments

Most stores calculate commissions in spreadsheets each month. Three common adjustments:

  • Tax. Net figures exclude GST/HST and US sales tax.
  • Gift cards. Pay when a card is sold or when redeemed; pick one.
  • Custom sale lines. Each custom item shows as “Custom sale,” so set a rule.

Commission rates and structures

Shopify does not calculate commission rates; you create the structure. A flat rate is simple. A rate over a monthly target rewards effort over time. A higher rate on services or slow inventory steers focus there. Any of these can work for a small business.

Create the rules in writing and have your team agree to them. Cover services, returns and growing sales targets. Check provincial or state employment standards first.

Commission tracking apps for Shopify POS retailers

Commission tracking apps calculate commissions inside Shopify POS, with different features. Three are below; none shows the Built for Shopify badge.

App Developer Commission features Price (USD)
POS Staff Manager Chief Software Solutions Rates by staff or product, shifts, hours, payroll reports From $9.99 a month plus 0.5%
Scoreboard AskMario Flat, over-target or tiered rates, CSV export Free for 2 staff; Pro $39 a month
KWD POS Staff Commission Independent developer Refund clawbacks, time clock, payroll export Free for 2 associates

Chief Software Solutions lists custom rates by staff or by product, plus shift and time tracking. The Chief Software Solutions Growth plan is $40 a month for 15 seats. Before you install any app, check its data access list and how long it keeps data.

App or spreadsheet?

For three or four people, spreadsheets work and cost nothing. An app with commission tracking pays off when you want to track staff targets live, manage a growing team or run tiered rates. Install one only when the spreadsheet takes more time than it saves.

In our accounts, the habit matters more than the tools. Running the same report on the same day keeps the team happy and operations simple.

Common questions

How much commission does Shopify take?

Shopify charges card rates and plan fees, not a commission on business revenue. In-person card rates start at 2.6% plus 10 cents on Basic.

Is Shopify POS any good for staff commission?

For one retail store, yes, with POS Pro. Credit, reports and permissions are built-in features. Rates and payouts are not.

Can staff see their own performance?

The Total sales by staff report in POS Analytics shows each person’s revenue and performance for a time period. It is the simplest way to track staff. Giving staff that view helps them track performance between pay days and keeps customers in focus.

What Shopify’s native route does not cover

  • Rates and payouts. Use a spreadsheet, payroll software or an app.
  • Stores without POS Pro. You see who rang it up, not in person sales credit. Pro costs $89 USD a month per store.
  • A third-party POS. Credit lives in that system.
  • Payroll. Pay commission through payroll, never out of the till.
