End of Day Report and Cash Drawer Close in Shopify POS

Close the cash drawer in Shopify POS: count, compare expected cash, print the session summary, and pull the right daily report for your books.

Shopify POS has no single “Z report” button. Your end of day is the register session close at the point of sale. Tap Register > Close session and count the drawer. Compare it with the expected balance on the Session complete screen, then tap Print for a summary of cash and every payment type. For total sales, open the Daily Sales report in the POS app. For your books, use the admin’s Finance reports, because Shopify says sessions are not meant for long-term reporting.

This guide is for a single-store retail business with one till and an ecommerce site, in the US or Canada. Why it matters: a clean nightly review catches errors while the team remembers the day. It also gives you data on store performance.

Shopify POS end of day report: what each piece does

Three tools together do the job of a classic end of day report for retailers. Each answers a different question about store data.

Question at close Shopify tool Where
Is the drawer right? Session close Shopify POS app at the location: Close session
What sold today? Daily Sales POS app: menu > Analytics
What goes in the books? Finance reports Shopify admin: Reports, Finances
Who sold what? Sales by staff report POS app analytics
What sold online? Sales by channel Shopify admin: Reports

What is a Z report?

A Z report is the classic end of day report from a point of sale system. It totals the day’s sales, refunds, taxes, transactions and payment types, then resets. Retailers moving from an older POS often expect one printed page per location.

Shopify spreads that page across the session close and its sales reports. Z reports from apps rebuild it from your store’s data.

Set up sessions first

Shopify’s sessions page gives the settings, which are free. In the POS app, tap the Register icon, then Settings.

  • Require cash counting at session start and end. Turn this on. The default is off, and without it sessions track sales but not drawer amounts.
  • Drawer auto-open. Opens the drawer on every cash sale.

In the admin, Shopify’s April 2026 update added reason codes under Cash management. With them on, opening the drawer without a sale asks for a reason. If none fits, staff pick Other and add a note. For a single store, this is the cheapest control on no-sale opens.

Staff permissions for the close

Since June 2026, Shopify manages retail staff, roles and PINs in Settings > Users in the Shopify admin. Use Limited permissions to keep staff out of settings. Give the close to one trusted person per shift, and tell the store team.

Open the drawer with a counted float

Tap Open session. Enter the amount in the drawer, or tap Count cash and count bills and coins. Tap Done.

If nobody opens a session, POS opens one on the next order, starting from the last calculated balance. That hides a short drawer from yesterday, so count it at every location you run, which for most is one.

Drops and mid-day counts

To move money in or out of the store’s drawer, tap Open session, then Add cash or Remove cash. Pick a reason and tap Save.

Shopify added mid-session counts in April 2026. Select Count cash in an open session, and the count is logged. Use it when staff change shifts.

Close the drawer

Shopify’s close steps:

  1. Tap Close session.
  2. Enter the amount in the drawer.
  3. Tap the checkmark and enter tomorrow’s float.
  4. Remove the money above the float.
  5. Review the Session complete screen. Counted and expected amounts should match.
  6. Tap Print for drawer details and a payment type summary on your receipt printer.

Closed sessions cannot be reopened or edited. Later, open Session history to review or print any past session at the location.

Close remotely from the admin

You can also close a session from the Shopify admin when staff forget. With POS Pro, the admin shows every session at the POS location.

Over and short: cause-to-fix table

What you see Likely cause Fix next time
Short by one sale’s change Sale rung as card, or change given twice Count mid-day
Over by a round number Money added without Add cash Record every float top-up
Expected amount wrong for days Session left open Close every night
Refund missing from expected Customer refund recorded to another method Refund each customer to the original method
No-sale opens with no reason Reason codes off Turn them on

Daily Sales report at the point of sale

This report compares today’s store performance with the same day last week. Tap the menu icon, then Analytics. It shows:

  • Net sales, average order value per customer and items per order.
  • Top selling products and product types.
  • Top staff by net sales.
  • Net payments by type.

Date ranges run from Today to Year to date for the retail location. These reports need the Shopify POS Pro plan at the POS location, a cost of $89 USD per month.

Admin sales reports for the books

Shopify is direct: do not use sessions for long-term reporting. Use the Finance and Order reports in the Shopify admin to review store data.

Filter Reports to Finances. The ones a single store uses most:

  • Finance Summary. Sales, customer payments, gift cards, tips, revenue and gross profit.
  • Total sales breakdown. Gross sales, discounts, refunds, net sales, shipping and taxes.
  • Taxes, plus the Canada sales tax report or the US sales tax report, each needing Shopify Tax.

Sales and payments reports can differ on timing. An order placed today and paid tomorrow lands on different days, so revenue and deposits rarely match to the day.

Retail sales reports by POS location

Filter to Retail Sales for POS-only sales reports. Shopify lists total sales by POS location, by product, by vendor and by staff member. Each covers only point of sale transactions at a retail location. Customer counts sit in the customer reports. Staff credit sits on each line item. Shopify says the data can take 1 to 5 minutes to update.

Split POS sales from online sales

Since June 30, 2026, Shopify offers an Is physical storefront filter in Reports. It splits POS sales from online sales by store location without an export.

In our accounts, retail owners who combine sales from both channels miss slow days at the till. Keep the online store and the counter apart at close. Combine sales for the month.

Customize and save your own end of day report

Shopify’s custom reports page says you can filter a default report by location, edit columns and change the time range. Then save it as a custom report.

For example, a useful saved report pulls total sales, refunds, discounts and payments, filtered to the physical storefront, set to Today. Customize it once and export it when your bookkeeper wants data in a file.

End of day report apps: TillClose and Stock Atlas

Two point of sale apps rebuild the one-page Z report from your store’s data.

App Free plan Paid plan What it adds
TillClose No free plan; 14-day free trial From $19 USD a month Z report PDF, drawer over/short with POS Pro
Stock Atlas Yes, free $4.99 USD a month CSV export, POS and online splits, scheduling

Stock Atlas says its report covers sales, refunds, payments, transactions, customer counts and top products. Apps cannot print to a POS receipt printer. Both read order history from the last 60 days.

Is a paid app worth it?

For one till, the free solution covers most needs: session print, Daily Sales and a free saved report. Pay when your accountant insists on one PDF per day, or for scheduling a summary email.

What the end of day numbers tell you

Shopify’s POS report guide lists uses beyond the drawer. Sales by product shows what to reorder and where stock levels run low. Discounts and voids show leaks, and staff sales activity shows thin hours.

Retailers should read the report for trends in POS data. A product sold out three nights running belongs at eye level, which is merchandising from data you have. Review promotions and their cost the same way against last week’s promotions.

Inventory and performance

Inventory reports pair well with the close. A line item that sold out today needs a reorder before the weekend. Each line item in the POS sales report shows net quantity. Shopify’s guide covers inventory sell-through, so check inventory weekly.

What Shopify’s native route does not cover

  • One printed Z report. The session print covers the drawer and payment types only. Use a saved report or an app.
  • Sessions across devices without Pro. Sessions are stored per device, so a reset can hide history from the business. The Pro cash tracking report adds a discrepancy summary and CSV export.
  • A third-party card terminal. Sales recorded as “Other” show as Manual in Finance reports. Match them to the terminal batch nightly.
  • Counting currency. A US bill in a Canadian store has no place in the CAD count. Record it apart.

Worked example: a Tuesday close

A Canadian gift shop opens with a $200 float. At 3 p.m. the owner counts and drops $400 with Remove cash. At 6 p.m. the drawer holds $612 against $615 expected, so it is $3 short.

The owner logs a reason and keeps $200. The saved report shows $2,940 in POS sales over 61 transactions and $380 online, before GST/HST. Both go on the sheet with the name of the person who counted.

End of day report FAQ

Does Shopify POS have a Z report?

Not as one button. The session print, the device report and a saved admin report cover the same data. A free or paid app adds the single page.

Can I see the end of day report on my phone?

Yes. The Shopify POS app runs on phone or tablet. Session history and device analytics show for the location you are signed in to. Review them before you lock up.

Do I need POS Pro?

For drawer counts, no; that part is free. Device analytics, performance data and admin access to every session need POS Pro.
