Shopify POS Lite vs Pro for a Single Store: The Break-Even Test
What POS Pro adds over the free in-person tier, what it costs per location in USD and CAD, and the margin test that tells one store if it pays.
For a single store with real foot traffic, POS Pro usually pays for itself. The base tier (still called POS Lite in Shopify’s staff help pages) has no exchanges, no in-store pickup and no staff permissions. It also lacks daily sales reports and in-POS receiving or stock counts. POS Pro is listed at $89 USD a month per location billed yearly, or $119 CAD in Canada. Both prices are from Shopify’s pricing pages, fetched October 18, 2026. The test: if Pro’s features protect or create more gross margin each year than the yearly fee, buy it. For most stores doing in-person sales every day, exchanges and pickup alone clear that bar.
This Shopify POS Lite vs Pro guide is for one physical store that also runs a Shopify online store. It compares cost, transaction fees, staff, inventory, customer management, reports and hardware. Then it gives a break-even test you can run with your own numbers.
Shopify POS Lite vs Pro at a glance
| Area | Shopify POS Lite (included) | Shopify POS Pro (add-on) |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Included with every paid Shopify plan | $89 USD or $119 CAD a month per location, billed yearly |
| Exchanges | No | Yes |
| Pickup in store, ship to home | No | Yes |
| Staff roles and permissions | No | Yes |
| POS-only staff | No | Unlimited |
| Stock counts and receiving in POS | No | Yes |
| Daily sales reports in POS | No | Yes |
| Hardware warranty (Shopify hardware) | 1 year | 2 years |
| Card rates and transaction fees | Set by your Shopify plan | Set by your Shopify plan |
The table comes from Shopify’s feature comparison and pricing pages. The last row matters most for budgeting: in Shopify POS Lite vs Pro, your card rate never changes. Shopify POS Lite vs POS Pro is a features decision, not a payments one.
What does POS Lite mean on Shopify?
The name Shopify uses now
Shopify POS Lite is the in-person selling tier that comes with every paid plan. Shopify’s subscription page now calls it the in-person selling features “included with all paid Shopify plans.” The pricing page calls it “Casual in-person selling.”
Shopify’s staff management page still refers to “POS Pro and POS Lite locations.” So Shopify POS Lite, casual in-person selling and the included features are the same thing.
Shopify POS Pro is an add-on, set per location. Shopify says you can add it “to specific locations to leverage the additional features only at the locations where they’re required.”
Is Shopify POS free?
The Shopify POS app is free to download, and Shopify POS Lite costs nothing extra. Shopify says the included features “can be used with any Shopify plan at no extra cost.” You still need a paid Shopify plan, and you pay card rates on each sale.
So Shopify POS free means no added POS software fee, not free payment processing or hardware.
How much does Shopify POS Lite cost?
Shopify subscription prices
The Shopify POS Lite cost is your Shopify subscription. These are Shopify’s published plan prices, fetched October 18, 2026:
| Plan | USD monthly | USD billed yearly | CAD monthly | CAD billed yearly |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $39 | $29 | $49 | $37 |
| Grow | $105 | $79 | $132 | $99 |
| Advanced | $399 | $299 | $517 | $389 |
The yearly column is the monthly rate when you pay for a year.
What Shopify POS Pro costs per location
Shopify’s US pricing page says: “Shopify POS Pro is an additional $89 USD/month billed yearly for each location.” The Canadian page lists “$119 CAD/month billed yearly for each location.” Both fetched October 18, 2026.
So the Shopify POS cost for one store on Shopify POS Pro is your Shopify plan plus that fee. On the Basic plan billed yearly, the POS cost is $29 plus $89, or $118 USD a month. In Canada, it is $37 plus $119, or $156 CAD.
Billing details
From Shopify’s help center:
- Basic, Grow and Advanced plans can choose monthly or yearly billing for POS Pro.
- Shopify POS Pro runs on its own 30-day app billing cycle.
- With annual billing, “you can’t downgrade until the end of the billing cycle.”
Taxes on your Shopify bill
Budget for tax on top of the listed rate. In our accounts, Canadian stores see GST/HST on their Shopify invoices. US stores see sales tax where their state applies it.
Transaction fees on POS Lite and POS Pro
In-person card rates by plan
Card rates come from your Shopify plan, not from Shopify POS Lite vs Pro. Shopify’s POS pricing page lists these “starting at” in-person card rates with Shopify Payments, fetched October 18, 2026:
| Plan | In person (USD) | In person (CAD) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | 2.6% + 10¢ | 2.6% + 0¢ |
| Grow | 2.5% + 10¢ | 2.5% + 0¢ |
| Advanced | 2.4% + 10¢ | 2.4% + 0¢ |
In Canada, Shopify lists in-person Interac at 0% + 15¢ CAD on these plans.
Online transaction fees
Your Shopify online store pays online card rates. The US page lists 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic, 2.7% + 30¢ on Grow and 2.5% + 30¢ on Advanced. The CAD page lists 2.8%, 2.6% and 2.4%, each plus 30¢ CAD.
Online transaction fees don’t change with POS Pro either. Both Shopify POS Lite and POS Pro share one plan, so all sales channels use its Shopify Payments rates.
Third-party transaction fees
If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds its own fee. The pricing page lists third-party transaction fees of 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow and 0.6% on Advanced. It says these “may apply when you use a third-party payment provider (instead of Shopify Payments).”
In our accounts, a Shopify store using an outside processor online pays the most common hidden cost.
Estimated transaction fees for one store
Example: a US store on Grow sells $40,000 a month in person by card, with an average sale of $50. That is 800 POS sales.
- Percentage: 2.5% × $40,000 = $1,000.
- Per-sale fee: 800 × 10¢ = $80.
- Estimated transaction fees: about $1,080 a month, on Shopify POS Lite or Shopify POS Pro alike.
The POS Pro fee is $89 on top. Payment processing is the bigger cost, but the tier doesn’t move it.
What POS Pro adds
From Shopify’s own comparison table, these features are No on the base tier and Yes on Pro:
| POS Pro feature | Why a single store notices |
|---|---|
| Exchanges | Without it, staff refund and re-ring. That is two transactions, and often a second card charge, for one swap |
| Pickup in store | Buy online, pick up in store. Often the biggest web-to-store driver |
| Ship to home, Ship and carry out | Sell an out-of-stock size at the counter and ship it |
| Local delivery fulfillment | Deliver nearby orders from the store |
| Retail staff permissions and management | Stop part-timers from issuing refunds or editing prices |
| Unlimited POS-only staff | Seasonal staff without admin accounts |
| Add staff to sale | Track who sold what, for commission |
| Automatic discounts | Your online promos also work at the register |
| Save/retrieve cart, Email carts | Hold a sale while a customer thinks |
| Daily sales reports, In-app retail store analytics | End-of-day close on the device |
| Tracking and adjusting inventory | Inventory work from the register |
| Fulfilling and receiving transfers | Receive purchase orders at the counter |
| Hardware warranty | Two years on Shopify hardware, against one |
Other help pages add two Pro-only inventory features. Stock counts in POS are “available only to locations with a Shopify POS Pro subscription.” Receiving transfers in POS needs the location to “be on the Shopify POS Pro subscription.”
Both Shopify POS Lite and Pro include card payments, camera barcode scanning, gift cards, refunds, cash tracking, customer profiles and offline cash payments. Both include “Customizable smart grid,” Shopify’s smart grid interface for checkout.
Staff management: POS Lite vs POS Pro
Staff on Shopify POS Lite
On Shopify POS Lite, every staff member logs in with a PIN. Shopify’s pricing page lists “Limited staff can access POS” on the Basic plan, and “Unlimited POS logins” on Grow and Advanced.
The bigger limit is staff management control. Shopify says admin users with POS access log in to POS Lite retail locations “with full access, because POS roles don’t apply.” A part-timer who can ring sales can also issue refunds.
Roles and permissions on POS Pro
POS Pro adds staff management, among its advanced features. Shopify says you can “create custom POS roles that give your Point of Sale staff a unique set of permissions.” A role can require manager approval, by PIN, before a return or exchange.
POS Pro also allows POS-only staff with no admin access. The pricing page calls this “Get unlimited staff accounts.”
Add staff to sale and sales performance
POS Pro adds Add staff to sale and a Total sales by staff report on the device. Shopify says the report shows “net sales by the staff members who were credited with line items.” If you pay commission or track sales performance, that report alone can justify the fee.
Inventory management on each tier
What both tiers include
Both tiers let you manage inventory in the Shopify admin. Shopify lists “Shopify admin inventory management” on both, with inventory across multiple locations.
On Shopify POS Lite, staff can change quantities with Quick count. Counting with review, receiving and transfers happen in the Shopify admin, on a desktop.
Advanced inventory management on POS Pro
POS Pro moves inventory management onto the shop floor. Shopify’s pricing page says Pro lets you “Perform inventory counts, complete purchase orders, and get low stock alerts from a single place.”
In practice, advanced inventory management means three things for a single store:
- Stock counts run on the POS app, with review in the admin.
- Purchase orders and transfers are received at the counter.
- Staff can manage inventory and adjust it from the register.
In our accounts, inventory management at the counter is the second most common reason to upgrade, after exchanges.
Demand forecasting and reordering
Neither Shopify POS Lite nor Shopify POS Pro includes demand forecasting at the register. Shopify says Sidekick can draft purchase orders “based on demand forecasting suggestions,” on any plan.
Customer management on each tier
Basic customer profiles on both tiers
Both tiers let staff create basic customer profiles at checkout. Shopify says customer profiles store “contact information, purchase history, and preferences.” The pricing page says the included tier lets you “capture basic customer information.”
Basic customer profiles cover receipts and purchase history.
Rich profiles and required checkout fields on POS Pro
POS Pro adds “Rich customer profiles” and “Customer loyalty insights,” per Shopify’s pricing page. Its clienteling feature gives staff “tools to track customer preferences.”
Shopify also says that with POS Pro, “you can set customer details as recommended or required during checkout.” For a store building an email list, required fields capture customer data at every sale. That is the main customer management gain.
Reports and advanced reporting
What Shopify POS Lite shows
On Shopify POS Lite, advanced reporting lives in the admin. Shopify lists “200+ real-time reports, plus custom analytics” on every plan, with in store and online sales together.
Daily sales and staff reports on POS Pro
Shopify’s POS Analytics page says it “is available only for locations that are currently on the Shopify POS Pro subscription.” The Daily Sales report shows net sales, average order value and items per order. It compares today with the same day last week.
The pricing page calls this “Professional retail reports.” Advanced reporting on the device saves the owner a laptop trip at close, and the staff report shows in store sales by person. It is useful, but rarely decides it.
Exchanges, pickup and omnichannel orders
Exchanges
Shopify’s exchange page is plain: “If you’re on the POS Pro subscription, then you can also exchange a returned item for a new item.” On Shopify POS Lite you refund, then ring a new sale. The pricing page lists “Returns at original purchase location” on the included tier.
In our accounts, exchanges are the biggest friction point for apparel and footwear stores on Shopify POS Lite.
Pickup, ship to home and local delivery
Pickup in store, ship to home, ship and carry out, and local delivery are all POS Pro features. If your Shopify online store offers local pickup, staff need POS Pro to fulfill those orders on the POS app.
Automatic discounts and saved carts
Automatic discounts from your online store work at the register only on POS Pro. Saved and emailed carts are Pro-only too. If you run site-wide sales, Shopify POS Lite staff must apply each discount by hand.
Shopify POS hardware for both tiers
Card readers and the POS terminal
Both tiers use the same Shopify POS hardware, so you can switch tiers without new equipment. Shopify’s hardware page says that to start, “you’ll need a smartphone or tablet and a Shopify card reader.” For mobile selling, it says “a smartphone and Tap to Pay might be all you need.”
Shopify’s offline-ready readers include Verifone Victa, POS Go, POS Terminal, Tap & Chip, Chipper 2X BT, Wisepad 3 and Chip & Swipe. A countertop POS terminal suits one fixed register. A Bluetooth POS terminal or reader, like the Chipper 2X BT, suits floor selling.
Barcode scanners, receipt printers and cash drawers
Shopify’s hardware page describes a full countertop: “a POS tablet, card reader, receipt printer, scanner, and cash drawer.” Both tiers support barcode scanners, receipt printers and cash drawers. Most stores need one or two barcode scanners per register. Shopify lists “Non-payment retail hardware integrations” on both.
The tier doesn’t change which POS hardware works.
Hardware warranty: one year or two
Shopify’s comparison table lists a hardware warranty of 1 year on the included tier and 2 years on POS Pro, for first-party Shopify hardware. If you buy a POS terminal and two barcode scanners, that extra year has real value.
Accept payments at checkout on both tiers
Payment methods
Both tiers accept payments the same way. Shopify’s payment methods page lists cash, cards, Shop Pay Installments, gift cards, store credit, Tap to Pay, and split payments. Both process payments through the same screen and card reader. The POS tier decides staff controls, not which cards work.
Shopify Payments or a third-party processor
Shopify Payments is the default way to accept payments on both tiers. Shopify lists “Integrated payment hardware with Shopify Payments” on both, in supported countries including Canada and the United States.
With a third-party processor, the card terminal is separate from POS, so staff key each total twice. In our accounts, that double entry is where cash-up errors start. Shopify Payments keeps one record per transaction, so you process payments and reconcile in one place.
Offline sales on both tiers
Both tiers can accept cash payments offline. Shopify lists “Offline cash payments” on both. Offline card payments need a supported reader and the Allow offline payments setting turned on.
Exchanges, returns and pickup orders don’t work offline on either tier. Your online and offline sales sync when the connection returns. See our offline outage procedure for the full routine.
The break-even test
The formula
Use your own numbers. This Shopify POS Lite vs Pro formula is simple.
Yearly POS Pro cost = monthly rate × 12
At the published yearly rate that is $1,068 USD or $1,428 CAD per location.
Sales needed to break even = yearly cost ÷ your gross margin %
Example: at a 50% gross margin, a US store needs $2,136 USD a year in extra or saved sales. That is under $45 a week. Run it with your real margin.
Where POS Pro protects margin
Now count where Pro’s features protect or create margin:
- Exchanges. Without them, an exchange is a refund plus a new sale. Count your exchanges per month from last year’s refund log. Each one costs staff time and a second payment step.
- Pickup in store. If you sell online, how many local customers would choose pickup? Every pickup saves outbound shipping and often adds a counter add-on.
- Ship to home from the counter. Each “we’re out of your size” that you can ship today is a sale you’d otherwise lose.
- Staff permissions. One prevented bad refund can cover months of fees.
- Stock counts and receiving at the register. If your buyer receives boxes at the counter, this saves a trip to the back office each delivery.
In our accounts, a single store that sells online and in person almost always clears the bar on pickup and exchanges alone. The exception sells in person only occasionally, at markets or by appointment.
Worked example: a gift store in Canada
A gift store in Ontario sells $25,000 CAD a month in store and $8,000 online. Gross margin is 48%. It runs Grow, billed yearly.
- Yearly POS Pro cost: $119 × 12 = $1,428 CAD.
- Break-even sales: $1,428 ÷ 0.48 = $2,975 CAD a year.
- Exchanges: 30 a month, each saving about 5 minutes of staff time and a second card fee on its POS sales.
- Pickup: 40 local web orders a month that would choose pickup over shipping.
Pickup alone saves the shipping cost on 480 orders a year from the online store. That clears $2,975 in protected margin for most stores. The owner adds POS Pro and sets staff roles the same day.
Shopify POS vs other POS systems
Why the tier matters less than the platform
Many POS systems price by register; Lightspeed’s plans, for one, include one register each. Shopify POS Pro charges per location, and Shopify POS Lite charges nothing.
The bigger difference is the record. Shopify POS shares one product and customer database with your Shopify online store and every other sales channel. Other POS software usually keeps its own catalog and syncs to Shopify through an app.
When another POS system is worth comparing
Compare other POS systems if your buyer needs deep purchasing tools, or if the store sells far more in person than online. Lightspeed Retail is the usual comparison for a retail business on Shopify. Our Shopify POS vs Lightspeed guide covers that choice.
Retail operations: a day on each tier
Opening and selling
A day on Shopify POS Lite looks like this. Staff log in with a PIN, ring sales, take card payments and email receipts. A customer who wants a different size gets a refund and a new sale.
A day on Shopify POS Pro adds controls. A junior staff member’s return needs a manager’s PIN. Pickup orders from the online store appear on the device. The exchange happens in one transaction.
Closing and receiving
On Shopify POS Lite, the owner checks daily numbers in the Shopify admin. Deliveries are received at a desktop.
On Shopify POS Pro, the Daily Sales report sits on the POS device, and boxes are received at the counter. For retail operations with one owner and part-time help, those advanced features and advanced tools save time daily. Required checkout fields also build customer data without extra steps.
When Shopify POS Lite is the right call
Stay on the free tier, without the advanced features, if all of these are true:
- You make in person sales a few days a month, not daily.
- You have one or two people on the register, both trusted with refunds.
- You don’t offer local pickup and don’t plan to.
- Exchanges are rare, and refund plus re-ring is fine.
- You do stocktakes in the admin, not at the register.
Pop up shops and markets
Shopify says the basic features work “almost anywhere, including brick and mortar stores, markets, and pop-up shops.” Shopify POS Lite suits pop up shops, markets and event booths, not a typical storefront.
When Shopify POS Pro is the right call
Shopify POS Pro fits permanent retail stores with daily foot traffic. Shopify’s pricing page says it is designed “for businesses selling from a permanent retail location.” It recommends POS Pro for businesses with “a lot of foot traffic, multiple tiers of staff, or a large inventory catalog.”
For a retail business with one physical store, the clearest signals are exchanges, local pickup and part-time staff. Any two usually decide it. Those advanced features matter most in permanent retail locations, even more across multiple locations.
Where Shopify POS wins without Pro
Shopify POS wins on the base tier when the store is the side channel. A brand that sells mostly online, with a showroom, gets checkout, gift cards and customer profiles at no extra cost.
Canada and US differences
POS Pro is $89 USD or $119 CAD per location a month, billed yearly. Canadian in-person card rates carry no per-sale fee, but Interac costs 15¢ CAD per transaction. In person sales in the US pay 10¢ each on top of the rate.
Retail operations differ by country in one place: Shopify Tax calculations are listed for the United States only, on both tiers. Canadian stores set up GST/HST in tax settings. POS Pro doesn’t change how either country’s sales tax works.
Multiple locations and a second store
POS Pro is billed per location, so with multiple locations each one on Pro adds a fee. Shopify lists 10 inventory locations on the Basic plan, Grow and Advanced, so a business with multiple stores fits any plan.
You can mix tiers across multiple locations and retail locations of different types. A main store on Shopify POS Pro and a seasonal kiosk on Shopify POS Lite is common. A stockroom set up among multiple locations doesn’t need POS Pro unless a register sells from it. Multiple store locations change the math only when each has its own register.
How to switch between Shopify POS Lite and Shopify POS Pro
Upgrade to POS Pro
- From your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Point of Sale.
- Click Settings > POS Pro Subscription.
- Click your location, then Add POS Pro > Approve subscriptions.
Downgrade and refunds
To go back, choose Cancel POS Pro > Confirm downgrade. Shopify says monthly subscriptions can be refunded if you downgrade within 7 days of the cycle start, and annual subscriptions within 30 days.
You don’t need to close your Shopify store to downgrade. Shopify says you can downgrade single locations “by managing your POS subscription.”
Trials and new locations
After a trial, “you must manually select POS Pro to continue using it.” Otherwise locations “automatically revert to using the in-person selling features at no extra cost.” A location added after the trial starts on POS Lite, with no separate trial.
POS Lite vs Pro FAQ
Is Shopify POS Pro worth it?
For a physical store with daily in person sales, usually yes. Lite vs Pro comes down to margin, so run the break-even test. If exchanges and pickup protect more than $1,068 USD or $1,428 CAD of margin a year, POS Pro pays.
Which POS system is best for Shopify?
If your online store runs on Shopify, Shopify POS is the default, because both share one inventory record. A third-party POS earns its place only for daily needs Shopify lacks, such as deep supplier ordering. See our Shopify POS vs Lightspeed guide.
Can both Shopify POS Lite and Pro run at once?
Yes. Shopify sets the POS tier per location. One store on POS Pro and a market stall on Shopify POS Lite share the same Shopify subscription.
Do transaction fees change with POS Pro?
No. Card rates and third-party transaction fees come from your plan. Shopify POS Pro only adds a flat fee.
